New Delhi: The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has introduced a new Multi-State Registration facility on the GST Portal, allowing businesses requiring GST registration in multiple States or Union Territories to initiate their applications through a single registration process.

The new facility became available on the GST Common Portal from October 1, 2026 and is aimed at making the GST registration process simpler for businesses operating across multiple States.

Under the new system, applicants can select multiple States or Union Territories where they require GST registration. The GST Portal then allows common registration information to be entered through a Master Temporary Reference Number (Master TRN).

After the common details are completed, the system generates State-specific TRNs for the selected locations. Applicants can subsequently provide the required State-specific information and complete the respective registration applications.

The new facility is expected to reduce repetitive data entry for businesses that need registrations in several States. Common information can be carried forward into the respective applications, while State-specific requirements continue to be handled separately.

However, the new facility does not mean that businesses will receive a single GSTIN applicable across India. GST registrations will continue to remain State-wise, and separate GSTINs will be issued for the respective States or Union Territories where registration is granted.

For example, a business requiring registrations in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Delhi can now initiate the applications together through the Multi-State Registration facility. The business would still receive separate GST registrations for each State.

The facility is currently available for eligible Normal Taxpayers seeking GST registration in multiple States or Union Territories.

The introduction of the Multi-State Registration option is expected to make the initial GST registration process more convenient for businesses expanding their operations across different parts of the country.

Key point: The new GST facility simplifies the application process, but it does not replace the requirement for separate State-wise GST registrations where applicable.
